Medical insurance, travel insurance, and Aeroworx policies – what’s the difference?!

The size and complexity of Africa mean medical treatment, especially emergency medical treatment, is more challenging here than in other continents.

Depending on where you are in Africa and what you are doing, you will need different types of cover. One thing is certain, though, if you are travelling in Africa, resident in Africa or an ex-pat working there, an Aeroworx Medical Emergency Evacuation policy is a must.

Medical insurance – This is normally limited to the country you are living or working in, and is designed to give you appropriate medical treatment without facing a bill for thousands and thousands of dollars. The policy is not normally valid when you are outside the country it is designated for.

Travel Insurance – This is usually limited to a set number of days and provides cover when you are travelling abroad for a holiday or work. The policy will give some emergency medical or personal accident cover, as well as loss of baggage etc. The emergency medical cover will often be limited to the country where the emergency took place. In Africa, that can be a very serious issue as the quality of medical treatment varies enormously. For example, a simple medical procedure in one African country could be a matter of life and death in another. That’s where Aeroworx comes in…

Aeroworx Medical Emergency Evacuation Policy – This cover is in case you have a medical emergency in Africa where you need to be transported quickly to a country that has the modern treatment you need. The best hospitals in Africa are in South Africa and Kenya. Aeroworx policy holders are swiftly transported from local hospitals, usually by airplane, to state-of-the-art medical facilities. Aeroworx organises all the paperwork, visas and transit, with policies that start from just $30 a month.

If an individual had to pay for the type of private medical emergency flight that Aeroworx organises, it could cost more $75,000. You then have to pay for the hospital treatment which can run into tens of thousands of dollars. Aeroworx policies cover 48 African countries including: Burundi, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Ethiopia, Kenya, Madagascar, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, South Sudan and Tanzania.

As our satisfied members testify, Aeroworx policies are a small price to pay for peace of mind.
